Restaurant of the month : Gigi

This month I found myself revisiting my favorite downtown noodle bar Gigi. This fantastic restaurant in the Wynwood Art District is quick, simple and absolutely delicious !

20120330-143237.jpg
Short Rib Buns

Gigi with its all glass, concrete, wood and steel minimal aesthetic has a menu that may be described as something like Asian- with a thick Southern accent. There are short rib buns and an excellent interpratation of “steak & eggs”, but also a mind blowing duck fried rice that is not something you will find at your neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

Gigi has become my go to quick and delicious no muss no fuss restaurant of the month ! P.S Try and grab a seat at the bar it’s the best seat in the house !

Press Release: New York—February 2012—“I’m not into things that are so obviously organic” says designer Hassan Pierre of this latest Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 collection. The well focused 15 look collection focuses on fashion that is luxurious and stylish while being environmentally conscious and socially responsible.

“I’m changing the way we view luxury sustainability.” Mr. Pierre believes that style should never be compromised for the sake of sustainability. With his latest collection Mr. Pierre continues to step outside the conventional notion of “organic” fabrics and creates garments using the most luxurious sustainable materials. Working closely with artists in Marfa, Texas to create “sonic fabric” a material that weaves reclaimed audio cassette tape into fabric, and select mills in Colorado & North Carolina, Mr. Pierre ensures that the production is green from start to finish.

Deriving inspiration from architect Frank Lloyd Wright, industrial photographs by Bernd & Hilla Becher, the now extinct audio cassette tape and the über chic lifestyle of Lee Radziwill; the collection is sleek, clean, classic and chic and has strong architectural silhouettes perfect for every woman. A strong black “sonic fabric” jacket with industrial zipper is perfect for chic winter days. A black floor length charmeuse dress is ideal for a beautiful winter gala.

Zaha Hadid is the latest  Starchitect to design a car park for Miami Beach !

With Miami Beach on the map as a world class destination for all things luxury, it only makes sense that parking garages become luxurious too. After all you don’t want your Bentley in some crummy beat down parking, right?

Architect Zaha Hadid has been chosen by the City of Miami Beach to design its newest parking garage at Collins Park, a neighborhood that’s home to the Miami City Ballet, the Bass Museum & W and Setai luxury hotels.

Miami Beach’s parking garages have received world-wide media attention and have become tourist attractions themselves. They include the Frank-Gehry designed, Pennsylvania Avenue Garage; Herzog de Meuron’s minimalist, edgy space at 1111 Lincoln Road; Arquitectonica’s Ballet Valet Garage at 7th Street and Collins Avenue; Enrique Norton’s newly designed parking garage at 16th Street and Drexel Avenue; and Perkins & Will’s recent City Center Garage Project at 18th Street and Meridian Avenue. Hadid’s new design is expected to continue to raise the bar for garages worldwide.

CHRISTMAS DINNER

It’s that time of year when family & friends get together for Christmas Dinner. See what’s on my menu !

20111220-181614.jpg
With a little help from my friends at Gourmet I was able to whip up this simple, classic & delicious dessert “The Old-Fashioned Pecan Pie.” Check out below on how to make this perfect Holiday dessert.

20111220-181905.jpg

Active Time: 35 min
Total Time: 5 hr (includes making pastry and cooling pie)
It’s impossible to go wrong with pecan pie. Especially one that is really loaded with nuts, has a little verve from orange zest, and isn’t overly sweet—exactly like the one here. Taking the time to track down new-crop pecans will push things right over the top.

Ingredients
Pastry dough
3/4 stick unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
2 cups pecan halves (1/2 pound)

Accompaniment: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Cooks’ note: Pie can be baked 1 day ahead and chilled. Bring to room temperature before serving

Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°F with a baking sheet on middle rack.

Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface with a lightly floured rolling pin into a 12-inch round and fit into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim edge, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang. Fold overhang under and lightly press against rim of pie plate, then crimp decoratively. Lightly prick bottom all over with a fork. Chill until firm, at least 30 minutes (or freeze 10 minutes).

Meanwhile, melt butter in a small heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar, whisking until smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in corn syrup, vanilla, zest, and salt. Lightly beat eggs in a medium bowl, then whisk in corn syrup mixture.

Put pecans in pie shell and pour corn syrup mixture evenly over them. Bake on hot baking sheet until filling is set, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cool completely.

WISBlog* Profile : Daisy Johnson

She’s the daughter of one of America’s most prominent families & the heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune yet Daisy Johnson is creating a name for herself all on her own.

I had the chance to chat & profile my good friend, New York based portrait & fashion photographer Daisy Johnson about her budding career, style icons & everyday passions.

20111213-113507.jpg

Hassan Pierre : Who is your style icon ? Why ?
Daisy Johnson : I’m drawn to bits and pieces from so many different people. I would have to say that, for me, Diane Keaton revolutionized the way women dressed in “Annie Hall” with her men’s ties and baggy pants; but, who can ignore, Kate Moss, with her simple, yet edgy style. She is always effortlessly chic.

HP : What is your fall must have item & what will you be wearing it with ?
DJ : Blazers are my go to fall must have item, especially this red organic “boiled” wool WISB*(WAY IT SHOULD BE) blazer. I will pair my blazers with lots of leather to edge it up; and I will be decked out in Green on Sundays.

20111213-114456.jpg

HP : What is your favorite restaurant & dish ?
DJ : I am looking forward to the upcoming opening of Acme on Great Jones St. I was lucky enough to attend a preview dinner and my taste buds are pretty excited !

HP : Favorite artist of the moment ?
DJ : Duane Michals… every moment.

HP : What is currently on your iPod ?
DJ : The Henry Millers and Katie Schecter

20111213-115302.jpg

HP : What are you currently reading ?
DJ : Your mind…

HP : Any current philanthropic endeavors ?
DJ : I am currently becoming more involved with the Alliance for Lupus Research. ALR aims to find better treatments and ultimately prevent and cure systemic Lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease, by supporting medical research. It is a something that means a lot to me and I plan on continuing to support the cause.

HP : What is your best Eco/Sustainable/Green tips or advice ?
DJ : It sounds cheesy but it is so easy, reduce, reuse & recycle. Also, people should compost !

HP : What are your upcoming travel plans for the holidays/New Year ?
DJ : I will be sailing in the Caribbean… with a lot of sunscreen!
